We looked to the shows in Copenhagen, New York, London, Milan and Paris to round up the key colour messages for the SS22 season.

SS22 marked a shift in the way we view colour, and not just in fashion. Colours attached to seasons no longer feels like the most relevant approach, but rather we are embracing how colour makes us feel and how that is applicable across the seasons, it’s ageless and upbeat.

Brights are no longer just for summer, their boldness energises us, so why not utilise those feelings year-round. Browns have come back onto our radar, typically assigned to winter seasons but this season designers reestablished them for summer, although they are set to become a core colour in our wardrobes as we transition through seasons.

Head to toe colour is prevailing, colour for so long has been used as an accent, enhancing collections in a slightly hesitant way, however now colour is the statement and there is a commercial drive to make that statement.

SUPER BLUE

Super blue has made its way over from the world of activewear, where it gets its digital edge from, and onto the catwalks. Modern and bold it translates to everything from tailoring, as seen at Stella McCartney, to cut outs, as seen at Rokh. As we open our minds to colour, this flattering shade is ageless, relevant to all markets.

TANGERINE PIZZAZZ

Tangerine Pizzazz does exactly what it says on the tin. These fresh, energising tones are colours of vitality. Proenza Schoulers and Shang Xia’s use of the colours invigorated, eliciting feelings of joy as the models took to the runway. Feelings that designers are keen to tap into in the coming seasons, as we look to the future and embrace our freedom.

PLAYFUL PINKS

Yummy shades of playful pinks are cool once again, moving on from millennial, these shades are cleaner and progressive, stirring up feelings of nostalgia. Look to Rejina Pyo and MSGM, successfully capturing a youthful essence for all.

CHALKY NEUTRALS

Chalky neutrals, the pure nature of this palette lends itself perfectly to minimalism. Calming and always chic with an earthy undertone, it’s a chance to explore unbleached cottons and raw textures as Gabriela Hearst expertly did at Chloé.

CITRUS SOURS

Citrus sours, almost a neon however with a newly acquired softness, a progressive way to view brights. Less harsh, they are more flattering than pure neons. Reflected in New York at Victor Glemaud and Dawei in Paris.

PRIMAL CLAYS

Primal Clays, browns have been on the horizon for a while and are finally dropping in, but not like we have seen before. This classic colour group has been revived, thanks to the likes of Knwls and Nensi Dojaka who’s progressive take on sexy and layering of warming brown tones at London Fashion Week show us exactly how to wear it.

PRIMAL CLAYS

Obviously, colors are set more psychic emotions in our choice nowadays. More power and energy are release from colors. We must have confidence in them. They upbeat and encourage us, and are bound to stir up a new look and attitude in design industires.
