In 1966, during the administration of Georgios Mavros, the National Bank of Greece, in the context of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of its founding, decided to create an educational institution in order to contribute to the development of Letters, Fine Arts and Science. This brilliant start was violently halted by the military coup, and that long-term plan was exploited only after the restoration of the Republic, after the April dictatorship dismissed the Director of the Foundation and brutally replaced those members of the Board who had not resigned. The National Bank Educational Foundation, or MIET, as it is known to the general public, actually started its activities in 1974, when Georgios Mavros, then Deputy Prime Minister, legislated to restore the disturbed order in the Foundation, restoring the the dismissed director of the Emmanuel Ch. Kasdaglis Foundation, who will remain in this position until his death in March 1998.
