ROSA ZAININGER AND HEDWIG RID: AN ERA OF STRONG WOMEN 1916 Rosa Zaininger (* 1876) starts cleaning bed and bed springs in Munich-Schwabing, Theresienstrasse 112. After the death of her husband, a stove maker (1911), she earns a living for herself and her three underage daughters (Rosa Babetta, Hedwig Maria, Brigitta Anna) with the service. In the middle of the First World War, the demand for the bed feather cleaning service is great: New feathers are in short supply (and the old feathers clump together in rooms that are unheated due to a lack of coal). In addition, the supply of workers in the service sector is tight: Many women work in the armaments industry and are no longer available. 1918 Rosa Zaininger expands bed spring cleaning to include the sale of bed springs and used beds. She registers trade and services as a trade on January 31st. 1919 Rosa Zaininger takes the step to brick-and-mortar retail. From November she will rent a small shop with a shop window at Theresienstraße 57. The hitherto very narrow range of bed springs and used beds is being expanded to include mattresses, bed linen and “underwear”. The springs are still cleaned at Theresienstraße 112. Bed spring cleaning, known locally as "bed cleaning", is the company's main source of revenue. Rosa Zaininger professionalises the cleaning and invests in a hand-operated bed spring cleaning machine from the market leader Lorch. 1923 Hedwig Maria (* 1907), Rosa Zaininger's second daughter, graduates from the commercial advanced training school for girls on March 22nd after attending two years (from May 2nd, 1921) as a clerk. Your training as an office worker in a commercial company includes subjects such as commercial correspondence, commercial arithmetic, bookkeeping, and exchange and check customers. So prepared, Hedwig enters her mother's bed business. Hedwig takes over the operation of the hand-operated bed spring cleaning machine as well as the collection and delivery of beds with a transport bike. Goods are delivered through local business contacts: Rosa Zaininger purchases inlets from Knee & Eicher, springs from Adler, fabrics and other accessories from Weil in Tattenbachstrasse. The business survived the hyperinflation of 1923. A service like cleaning the bed springs made it possible to immediately adjust prices to the rapid inflation. The short time between placing the order and paying limited the impact of inflation on the agreed price. Income could be reinvested immediately in short-term capital goods (inlets, springs), while capital-destroying savings in investment funds were not necessary. 1925 Hedwig Maria marries the businessman Ludwig Rid (* 1899) on April 2nd. Rid does not join the company, but remains independent as a commercial agent. The later company name goes back to him. 1928 Hedwig Rid continues to run the Theresienstraße 57 bed shop on behalf of her mother for one year. Rosa Zaininger moves to Bad Reichenhall on January 15th with her youngest daughter Brigitta Anna, who suffers from asthma. There she opens another bed shop at Unterer Lindenplatz 4 (corner of Rosengasse). 1929 On January 1, Hedwig Rid takes over bed cleaning with a bed specialty business for a purchase price of 5,000 RM from company founder Rosa Zaininger, who de-registered her business on January 29 in Munich. The company founder leaves the company. Son Günther Rid was born on May 27th. At Theresienstraße 57, Hedwig Rid moves into larger business premises right next to the previous shop. 1932 After the stock market crash of October 1929, with the crisis in the world economy, economic output in the German Reich falls sharply, and unemployment rises to a record high. Hedwig Rid's bed business is also apparently struggling with a drop in sales. That is why Hedwig Rid secures her livelihood and the business with an additional income: In July 1932 she takes over a small business with newspapers and magazines and distributes the Münchner Neue Nachrichten for a commission from 5 a.m. onwards. (Rosa and Brigitta Anna Zaininger returned to Munich in 1932, but did not return to Hedwig Rid's bed business.) 1936 Hedwig Rid took over larger business premises at Augustenstrasse 74, at that time the main shopping street in Munich-Schwabing. The sales area, which has been enlarged to 100 square meters, enables her to broaden and deepen the range: The trade in beds and bed textiles is gaining in importance compared to bed feather cleaning. The shop has two shop windows and operates under the name of "Bed specialty shop and cleaning H. Rid". Hedwig Rid buys a DKW as a company car for 1,642 RM. The economic framework conditions for the expansion and investment seem favorable: In the National Socialist state, the massive expansion of the armaments industry (in preparation for the Second World War) led to an economic upturn with a simultaneous decline in high unemployment. 1938 The move had a positive effect: Hedwig Rid was able to employ a salaried employee for the first time, the taxable turnover rose from 6,000 RM in 1932 to 7,500 RM in 1938. Hedwig Rid joined the Nazi women's group. 1939 The Second World War does not mean a major turning point for Hedwig Rid's specialty bed business - unlike many men-run companies whose managing directors are called up for military service and who then rest. She continued her shop and was able to increase sales by a good 50 percent (compared to 1938) to 11,900 RM by 1943, despite the coupon system and the shortage of goods. The sales point for the Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten contributed to the turnover until the end of the war. 1942 The trade in beds and home textiles outweighs bed feather cleaning more and more. The authorities order the entry as a sole proprietorship in the commercial register, which takes place on June 29th. The business purpose is described as "bed retail and bed cleaning". Hedwig Rid undertakes to only run the business with full first and last names. The name is set to "Hedwig Rid bed specialty store". 1945 Total destruction of the shop at Augustenstrasse 74 and the warehouse on January 4th during Allied air raids. Just four days later, Hedwig Rid opened a provisional shop in a joint shop with the undamaged textile house Wilhelm Krumbacher in its premises at Augustenstrasse 37. Hedwig Rid opposed the admission of her son Günther Rid to the Hitler Youth (HJ) and made the payments to the NS- Womanhood a. The sale of Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten ends on May 1, immediately after the US Army invades Munich. In the following November, Hedwig Rid announces the small trade in newspapers and magazines. After the end of the war and the clearance of trade by the US military government in Bavaria, Hedwig Rid received license No. EH 1249 to continue her retail business in a joint shop with the Krumbacher textile company. Sales plummeted after the bombing and the end of the war and, at 1,500 Reichsmarks, only reached a good twelve percent of sales in 1943 (11,900 RM). In order to generate sales at all with goods that can hardly be found, Hedwig Rid switches to non-range goods such as glass buttons and toys. 1947 Hedwig Rid is denazified on April 12th as unencumbered. The difficult political and economic situation, especially the broken Reichsmark currency system, does not make it easy for Hedwig Rid to relaunch her bed specialty business. 1948 Hedwig Rid takes over the entire area of the previous shop community at Augustenstraße 37 for a short time after the Krumbacher textile house moves into its own premises. She receives support from an apprentice. However, the lease is terminated and ends on May 31, 1949. After the currency reform on June 20 and the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, the economic situation stabilized: The opening balance on June 21 shows DM 1 with an inventory of DM 4,000. 1949 Hedwig Rid made the most important decision for the future of the company in 1949: she decided to move her business to the center of Munich. She rents 100 square meters of retail space on the ground floor at Sonnenstrasse 11, in one of the first houses to be rebuilt after the currency reform, the Riegerblock. The new beginning will take place on June 1st and 2nd with the move and the opening. Your workforce consists of three people: you, the apprentice and your son Günther. In the spring, at the request of his mother, who can no longer cope with the workload without support, he joins the company as an unpaid employee. At the same time, he gave up his medical studies, which he began in 1948, and enrolled in the business administration course at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. 1952 Purchase of the house at Neuhauser Straße 12 (at that time house number 50) and start of the planning for the renovation. The house is the first property owned by the family business. 1953 On May 13th, Hedwig Rid changes the name of her company to "Betten Rid", giving the company the name it is still using today. It is in this context that a figurative mark, the feathers-shaking Frau Holle, is introduced. From Easter the complete renovation of the house at Neuhauser Strasse 12 will take place. On August 28, the first Betten Rid branch will open there. The sales areas extend over a total of three floors. On the second floor, the feather floor, there is a choice of 18 feathers and down qualities, clean and hygienic under glass. The statement of the junior boss, Günther Rid, relates to this: "The soul of a real bed business is the feather department." In the presence of the customer, the selected inlets and feather or down fillings can be made into pillows or duvets. Günther Rid completed his business studies degree on February 20th with a “very good”. THE PATH TO THE FAMOUS BETTEN SPECIALIST BUSINESS: THE GÜNTHER RID ERA 1954 Günther Rid joins Hedwig Rid as a personally liable partner in the open trading company "Betten Rid", which has been in existence since January 1st. 1955 Reconstruction of the parent company at Sonnenstrasse 11 with enlargement of the sales area by taking over the area of the insolvent, neighboring company Stoff Kübelsbeck. The turnover of both shops is growing in the German economic miracle. Günther Rid acquires the building at Neuhauser Strasse 25. Günther Rid receives his doctorate from the State Economics Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich on July 29th after passing the oral exam. The topic of his doctoral thesis is "The business problem of promoting young talent in retail." Günther Rid continued after completing his doctorate and in 1987 led to the establishment of the Günther Rid Foundation for Bavarian retailers. 1958 Dr. Günther Rid acquires part of the property at Theatinerstraße 47. The city of Munich has blocked the development of the property until the decision on the route of the tram within the framework of an inner-city local transport system. 1959 Dr. Günther Rid acquires the property at Neuhauser Strasse 1 on November 11th. 1960 The growth of the Betten Rid company is associated with a high level of advertising. In print media with a focus on Munich and the surrounding area, the company places advertisements that are typical of the time every week. Betten Rid is one of the first Bavarian companies to advertise in the still young medium of television. 1961 Hedwig and Dr. Günther Rid dissolve the joint company on November 10th. Hedwig Rid retires from active management. Dr. Günther Rid becomes the sole owner of the company, which is now run as a sole proprietorship. Elisabeth Rid (* 1931) takes over the management of purchasing. Franz Betzler receives single commercial power of attorney. 1968 The sales area of the main store at Sonnenstrasse 11 is expanded a second time and opened in May. Construction and opening of a second branch on Theatinerstrasse in October. Dr. Günther Rid acquires the Tal 6 property. 1969 Franz Betzler leaves the company. Günter Ramming and Werner Sobioch receive power of attorney. 1972 GeHaVau Grundbesitz und Hausverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH was founded on November 27th to manage the property owned by Dr. Günther Rid. The first office is on Sonnenstrasse, the first managing directors are Dr. Günther Rid and Ruth Angela Wachowiak. The commercial director of Betten Rid, Werner Sobioch, has a five percent stake in the company. 1975 Dr. Günther Rid acquires the property at Kaufingerstraße 12. 1977 Closure and demolition of the Theatinerstraße branch after the city of Munich lifted the building block (as a result of the decision to build the inner-city subway) and the property was rounded off by exchanging space. Start of the construction of the current house. 1978 Opening of the new bed shop in Theatinerstraße with today 2,000 square meters of sales area as well as the service units for tailoring and embroidery. Betten Rid is represented with its largest house in the center of Munich. GeHaVau moves into its own business space on the 3rd floor of Theatinerstrasse. Ms. Fritsching and Renate Kohl take over the management. The company manages the existing properties owned by Dr. Günther Rid and takes care of necessary renovations and conversions. 1981 Helga Rid (* 1945) starts working for GeHaVau on April 1st. 1986 Hedwig Rid dies on October 1st. Dr. Günther Rid ends the existing sole proprietorship on May 1st and changes its name to a GmbH & Co. limited partnership. Betten Rid Geschäftsführung GmbH is the fully liable general partner. In addition to Dr. Günther Rid joins the management of the GmbH in June, Jürgen Schroers, Monika Spiller and Günter Ramming. Acquisition of the house at Neuhauser Strasse 49 in November by Dr. Günther Rid. After his decision to merge and completely rebuild the houses at Neuhauser Strasse 49 and 50 (today house number 12), the demolition work begins. 1987 From March onwards, the two houses at Neuhauser Strasse 49 and 50 are rebuilt and merged with continuous space on each floor. Since the facade of building no. 49 is a listed building, this part of the facade must be reconstructed in its historical form. The most difficult task is to protect the citizen hall church next door from damage during the demolition and construction work. A shop with five sales floors is being built and will open on September 18th. The new store takes the place of the regular Sonnenstrasse store, which will be given up in September. On December 1st, Dr. Günther Rid founded the Günther Rid Foundation for the Bavarian retail trade. According to the wording of the first statute, the central purpose of the foundation is to “promote the professional training of young managers in Bavarian retail with special attention to medium-sized companies”. Günther Rid brought up a topic that had preoccupied him intensively since receiving his doctorate in 1955. Helga Rid receives power of attorney at GeHaVau. 1988 The opening of the "Betten Ridchen" branch at Schrammerstrasse 3, a specialty store especially for children, opens up this customer group with an independent branch concept. The Günther Rid Foundation is approved on March 3rd and is therefore legally competent. (Photo: 22) The statutes of December 1, 1987 come into force, the foundation moves into rooms at Theatinerstraße 47 (3rd floor, next to the Betten Rid administration).
