In 1925, two Belgian industrialists met at the Brussels Expo: one, a specialist in enamelling; the other, an expert in foundry. Together they "cracked the code" to enamel cast iron and fill kitchens with color. Together, the founders of Le Creuset ushered in a new era in kitchenware. After their first meeting, Armand Desaegher and Octave Aubecq agreed to collaborate and defined the basic production process for the enameled cast iron cocotte that we still use today. When they created a working prototype in 1925, Le Creuset was born. The couple established a foundry in the town of Fresnoy-le-Grand, about two hours north of Paris. The factory is located at a crossroads of transport routes, which facilitates the supply of iron, coke and sand necessary for production. Volcanic, Desaegher and Aubecq's first enamel color, inspired by the incandescent orange hue of liquid cast iron inside casting molds, has become our flagship color. Raymond Loewy has been referred to by many names, including "the man who shaped America," "the father of Streamlining," and "the father of industrial design." But few people know about its connection to our iconic cookware. The official designer of our 1958 Coquelle, Loewy redesigned the traditional Le Creuset round casserole to appeal to post-war tastes for a minimalist design.
