Carl Denig

Carl Denig was born in Rotterdam in 1892. His family originally came from Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1910 Carl Denig went to London for a 2-year training as a tailor. To conclude the successful completion of his education, he went with 2 friends to the Isle of Wight in 1912 to camp in a self-made tent. They were promptly arrested as spies for accidentally spending the night on a military training ground. A real lawsuit followed, but the three were soon released. In the meantime, the Dutch press had picked up the story and upon his return to the port of Rotterdam, there was great interest in his camping adventure. This gave Carl Denig the idea to start manufacturing tents and so it happened. The first Denig tents left the studio on the Rokin in Amsterdam. Eventually clothing was added to the collection and from 1924 Denig had one of the first "shop in shops" for Scouting Nederland! In the 1930s the company moved to its current location on the Weteringschans. A second store was opened in The Hague on the Laan van Meerdervoort. The store remained open during WWII, although with a limited range. According to daughter Carla Denig, her father had little interest in the occupier and was even imprisoned for a few days after his refusal to supply a German officer with a few shirts without a coupon.
