Erlkoenig

When the bookstore Erlkoenig opened in the west of Stuttgart in autumn 1983 - together with and right next to the legendary Café Jenseitz - "something like that" was still something special, for some even unheard of. Mums and dads told their offspring to use the opposite side of the street on their way to school... Almost 33 years later: what is special and unheard of is that we still exist in times when you can choose to be a veteran, an institution or a legend and the risk is constantly increasing of being offered any prizes for "life's work" - probably from people who have never entered the shop as customers... Times are changing: - When we opened, the leadership was the Stuttgart Christian Democrats still mostly homophobic (today only homo); - if someone was called "gay" in school, "homosexual" was meant (today it's more like "boring") - when you thought of the Amazonas, you thought of a big river in South America, if you like me still of pugnacious matriarchs (today of the "You-know -already-who" of the book trade)...
