ONCE UPON A TIME AGO The founder of Fristads, John Magnuson, opened a workwear manufacturing facility in the small village of Fristad in 1925. At a time when industrialization was booming and workwear was not yet available in Sweden, Magnuson recognized the potential of this untapped market. When his plans to import clothes from America came to nothing, Magnuson had the idea of making them himself. In 1929, Fristads was the first company in Sweden to make jeans, and it was also the first to offer a full range of workwear, including pants, dungarees, overalls, shirts and coats. fristads woekwear sweden The design work was done in-house. Skilled seamstresses from the area were employed. Thousands of items of clothing could quickly be manufactured and sold throughout Sweden. The garments quickly became very popular with dock workers, bricklayers, carpenters, painters and other professional craftsmen. Within a very short time, the demand was so great that production could barely keep pace, which led to the acquisition of another factory, branches in other cities and the purchase of Fristads' own weaving mill. Growth continued and by the end of the 20th century, Fristads was Sweden's largest manufacturer of workwear. THE TRADITION OF INNOVATION In the 1940s, John Magnusson set himself the goal of developing an innovative material that beats the tear resistance of the then unsurpassed jeans material. He achieved this with the most durable material in the Fristads range, the FAS® cotton material. It stood the test of time and is still used today in Fristad's work clothes. Fristads' range of products has evolved with technological advances in the industry. Using innovative materials and processes, we have continuously improved our collections to meet the needs of modern craftspeople for superior comfort, great fit and contemporary style. And our long tradition of innovation lives on. In 2018, Fristads received the PCAW “Innovation of the Year” award for a craftsman jogger. In 2019, Fristads was the first company in the world to develop an environmental product declaration (EPD) for clothing. And in the same year we launched our first environmentally declared workwear, which was rewarded with the internationally renowned Red Dot Award. Thanks to the EPD, the environmental impact of a garment can be measured and minimized at every step of the value chain.
