La Valle dei Mulini

The Aceto family has been operating in the field of lemon growing and related transformation for 7 generations and precisely since 1825 when the closest ancestor, Salvatore Aceto, the precursor of this true cult of the typical Amalfi lemon, the "Sfusato Amalfitano" (lemon elliptical-elongated shape, with very double rind or flavedo with high aromatic properties, large and pointed umbo, cloves in the presence of no less than eight-nine, most of the time without seeds, size not less than 100 grams, rich in suuco al 50% more than other qualities, rich in vitamins and proteins and low in calories) he started his own business as a producer and trader of the precious citrus by buying a small piece of land in Ravello. An evolutionary process began which with the passing of the years and with the enlargement of the family component, leads to the involvement of neighboring lemon productions (Amalfi, Maiori, Praiano, Conca dei Marini, Cetara, Tramonti, Ravello, etc.), resulting in operations trade on a larger scale. The period of maximum splendor for the family business is in the years ranging from 1930 to 1938, years in which the so-called "ships" for distant England departed, loaded with lemons, ancient ships that anchored off the Amalfi coast, they were loaded with the help of "barges" which were shuttled from the jetty to the same ship to load large wooden crates according to the size of the lemons they had to contain. After the Second World War, the Aceto family resumed trade on national markets with difficulty, participating several times in the international fair in Verona, soon becoming the largest producer of lemons on the entire Amalfi Coast. At the end of the 1960s, other plots of land were purchased for the cultivation of lemons, among which the most important is the one located in the “Valle Dei Mulini”, capable of producing about 800 quintals of lemons per year. At the beginning of the 80s Luigi ACETO undertook the first agritourism initiative on the Amalfi Coast, opening the Lemon Graden to the public in the "Valle dei Mulini" company, a characteristic place for ecological walks, studies on the cultivation of lemons and knowledge of their properties, as well as a refreshment point where at the end of meals after a strictly lemon slice of cake, a good digestive was served ... "Il Limoncello" essentially natural product obtained by infusion of the fruit skins, added with pure alcohol, water and sugar, which contains itself the scent of Amalfi crops, and which, born from a home recipe dating back to the early 10th century, is currently obtained in the company laboratory strictly with manual and traditional procedures. After years of hard work, in recent times the first fruits deriving from the recognition of the Protected Geographical Indication "Limone Costa D'Amalfi" have been ripening, the precious activity of safeguarding the lemon culture, a primary component for the protection of the territory, of history, tourism and the environment, requires ever more pressing and mandatory commitment and dedication. Within this context, the CATA (Cooperativa Amalfitana Trasformazione Agrumi)., Among other subjects proposing the IGP (as per DM Mipaf of 20/03 / 200e reg. CEE n ° 1356/2001 of 04/07/2001) is the first company to produce and market the Amalfi Coast PGI lemon liqueur. On 3 October 2003 the "Consortium for the protection of the Amalfi Coast PGI lemon" was established with headquarters in Amalfi. transformers. Marco Aceto was called to preside over this association, a position held until 2012, in the continuing tradition of the family, with the aim of safeguarding this asset, bearing in mind that today this precious fruit risks disappearing as a result of the high average age of the farmers and relative abandonment of land, with significant negative environmental and tourist consequences. This initiative was immediately "adopted" by Slow Food of Bra (CN) with the establishment of a garrison on the Amalfi Coast. Since 2009 the Aceto family has given life to the current company for the production and transformation of its products. AMALFI LEMON TRADING srl And has established the "LEMON TOUR" with the motto "In Amalfi do not give up a pleasant walk in the enchanting Valle Dei Mulini, to experience a strong emotion, walk with us into the rural area to get to know the countryside !. These tours are a real sort of journey to rediscover the “sfusato amalfitano” lemon with guided tours in Italian and English and tastings. The Aceto family owns in the city of Amalfi two plots of land cultivated mainly with lemon trees with the BIO certification by the ICEA body The first plot of land, the place from which the most famous postcard of Amalfi is portrayed, enjoys a climatic position perfect and it is precisely here that all the varieties of citrus and aromatic herbs used for the production of the infusions are grown, it develops a total area of 5,000 square meters arranged in terraces, which climb from the state road to the Amalfi Cemetery, one of the monuments of interest artistic historian of the city. The second plot, where the laboratory and the warehouse is located, extends over an area of 70,000 square meters, arranged in terraces along the hill that from the northern part of Amalfi, called the Valle Dei Mulini, climbs up to the hamlet of Pogerola, in 350 meters above sea level. The operational headquarters of the Aceto family is located at Via delle Cartiere 55/57 in Amalfi, and consists of two rooms: the laboratory for a total area of 50 square meters, and the warehouse with adjoining office for a total of 240 square meters. As for the statistical data, the processing company produces about 150,000 liters of limoncello with a production of 200,000 bottles of various sizes, all strictly artisanal. These figures were obtained thanks to the importance given to the organization of the sales network. Considerable importance was given to the foreign market with exports to Germany, England, Belgium, France, Australia, Holland, USA The initiatives were many, including the attendance at international fairs in Bari, Milan, Verona, Rimini, Vicenza, Perugia, Rome, Parma, London, Tokyo, Cologne, Paris, New York, San Francisco, etc.
