Founded in 1961, Saturn is now managed as an independent sales brand under the umbrella of the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group – Europe's number one in consumer electronics retail. After the company founders sold Saturn to Kaufhof Warenhaus AG, new Saturn stores were opened in 1985, first in Frankfurt and then in other German cities. From 1990 there was another change of ownership and the Media Markt holding company gradually acquired the existing Saturn stores. After this merger of Saturn and MediaMarkt, the owners consciously opted for a two-brand strategy, which has proven to be an important success factor for the group of companies to this day. The two brands, Saturn and MediaMarkt, are managed independently of one another under the umbrella of the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, which in turn is majority-owned by Ceconomy AG. Saturn is currently represented in Germany at around 140 locations in Germany. This also includes the largest electronics store in the world with 17,000 square meters of retail space on Hamburg's Mönckebergstrasse. There is also Saturn in Luxembourg.
