There was no question of easy work when Matthias Schmickler officially founded the company on November 8, 1910. One day later, he and eight employees begin the tedious work: With shovels and pickaxes, dump trucks and horse-drawn carts, they pull into the pits on Sandkaulerweg in Sinzig and set a milestone in motion – under the most difficult conditions: gravel mining was very hard work back then. With sweat-inducing muscle power, they loosen the rocks in order to sift and load them on the spot by hand. A wagon pulled by two horses takes care of the transport. Gravel and sand were mined by hand in Sinzig until the war and the currency reform.
