In a church, in a chapel or next to the altar, or even in a house, who has never seen a sacred image at least once? It attracts our attention, asks us to approach and contemplate it, enters into dialogue with us, seeks our heart, appearing to us at the same time intimate, familiar and mysterious. He asks us to stop. We discover that it contains another type of time, dense and static, not subject to crumbling into moments after moments; and there is also another type of space, not marked by dimensions and therefore further than the one that contains us and on which our feet rest. Absolute time and space, but not deserted: from there Presences overlook our world, other eyes seek and meet ours and dialogue with us, even if their mouth is closed. There are no words from those who have become eternal names but the demonstration of the beauty of the condition they have reached; and that we need to learn to contemplate. The sacred image is the sign through which Someone shows us a way and urges us to have the soul to follow it, if in fact in our spirit we are wandering and restless pilgrims looking for a goal, now we can stop, fix it and let ourselves be fixed. The canon of forms, the symbolism of colors ... all born not for an act of conquest but thanks to a centuries-old obedience, if we see with the eyes of the spirit we recognize what an admirable correspondence there is between the absolute truth of a face and the drawing from the harmonious and purified trait that circumscribes it on the white background of the table, and of how the color manifests its belonging to a spiritual order not visible but accessible, whose testimony is precisely the icon, in which in fact the invisible is made through us visible. Yes, the icon is a place for a conference, a means that helps to meet the sweet Presence that is beyond all things, and that through the icon reaches us in a surprising form and a Beauty that our being is enabled to to grasp: the ineffable Truth that makes everything exist, God, has taken a Face. That Face has allowed himself to be transcribed in the icon so that this face as a symbol and becomes an instrument with which divine reality and human reality communicate mutual love, first the divine love that precedes him and then the human love that responds to him meet and are joined, our true primary relationship, that with God, is thus fostered and nourished, thanks to which no one is alone anymore and our pilgrimage reaches the his goal. He who is represented in the image tells me: “re-enter yourself, up to the most intimate and profound point of you, there you can find me”, and there the sweet, living presence manifests itself. What joy: the one whom the icon shows me is the one whom I feel a guest in my heart!
