In 1999 two friends, Koen de Groot and Michiel Verberg, had been riding together for years. Unsatisfied with the availability and the BMX bikes that were on offer, they decided to take things into their own hands. They started Soulcycle BMX shop in a basement under a student house on one of the Amsterdam canals. With only three bikes, some inner tubes, a spoke wrench and a vision, this soon grew out to become a fully packed basement, with in every corner BMX bikes, BMX parts or flyers for various events. Next to running a successful shop, they also started organizing events in 2000 to promote the freestyle BMX. Their first contest was the first edition of Flatground, a flatland event in a gym in Amsterdam West, attracted a small but dedicated group of riders. This contest was child’s play compared to the fifth Flatground edition, which took place on the Westergasfabriek terrain. Check Props Issue 65 for a report. Next to this spectacular flatland BMX event, Soulcycle has been known to put on some mean street / park contests as well, such as the Home Made Jam, which took place in the same venue as Flatground. Check Props Issue 52 for a report. Other events organized by Soulcycle are: Mooracup, Soulcycle XL Series, Soulcycle F.T.O. Series, Soulcycle BMX Championships. Since October 2004, Soulcycle has exchanged their basement shop for a more mature shop. The renewed Soulcycle shop can be found on the Weteringschans 221 in the center of Amsterdam. At this point Jeroen Bouwmeester joined the Soulcycle crew to keep this company on the right track. The website you are on now replaced the previous site in the fall of 2015, due to growing demand the new website was created with a lot of new functions & easy to use on mobile devices. Too give BMX-ers from all over the world a better service.
