In 1853 the metal goods factory Straub & Schweizer was founded in Geislingen (Steige), which was merged with the metal goods factory A. Ritter & Co, Esslingen in 1880 and converted into a stock corporation under the name Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. As early as 1910, WMF was considered the largest industrial company in Württemberg with around 4,000 employees at the time. The Cromargan trademark has been almost as well known as the WMF name since 1927, and it is no coincidence that it is often used as a synonym for stainless steel 18/10. Here WMF did pioneering work by being the first company to use this material to manufacture products in the household goods sector. WMF has recently refined the material and is now producing cutlery from scratch-resistant Cromargan protect.
